Jack Kilby Science Day

Barton Community College had its 11th annual Jack Kilby Science Day on Thursday, Oct. 16. High school juniors, seniors, and gifted students from all across the state of Kansas were there for the events.

Dr. Richard Abel, Dean of Academics, stated at the opening session that the first year that Barton did this, they have about 100 students. For this years, Barton hosted about 500 students.

Leonard Bunselmeyer, Barton Board of Trustee Member and retired medical lab scientist, described how Jack Kilby Science Day started.

“In 2000, I was on the Planning Committee for Jack Kilby,” said Bunselmeyer. ‘It was the year when Jack Kilby got his Nobel Prize in Physics. Jack Kilby Science Day was set up for kids to find out the pathways in the field of science.”

The high school students went to three sections for the 11th annual Jack Kilby Science Day. The first section was located in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The session compose of animals from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Columbus, Ohio.

The second and third sessions were composed of different activities that were located throughout Barton’s campus that day.

“I like the KBI Lab and Crime Scene,” said Kyle Harris, senior of Ness City High School, Ness City, Kansas. “I learned a lot in that session.”

“I enjoy watching geo cashing and fossil preparation,” said Bunselmeyer.
